AFC Telford 3-2 Peterborough Sports
admin
The Bucks somehow found a way to win on an eventful night of twists and turns at the SEAH Stadium.
Things got off to a slow start on a wet evening in Shropshire. First, an issue with the visitors’ team bus caused to kick off being delayed by 15 minutes. Then, just moments into the game, an injury to Bucks keeper, Brandon Hall, led to a further 11-minute hold up. It also resulted with Hall leaving the field and, with no reserve keeper on the bench, Jimmy Armson took his place in the Telford goal.
It went from bad to worse for Wilkin’s men, when they found themselves 1-0 down shortly after play resumed. The Bucks failed to properly deal with an aerial ball, and Theo Williams hammered home past the helpless Armson in goal.
But that was pretty much the only time the ball went anywhere near the Bucks’ stand in keeper, as Wilkin’s men proceeded to dominate matters. Alex Fletcher went close for the Bucks in 18th minute, crashing a shot off the bar. The Bucks appealed for a penalty in the havoc afterwards, but it ended with Jordan Piggott being booked for simulation. Adan George had a couple of decent opportunities shortly afterwards, before George turned provider, but Remi Walker couldn’t quite convert George’s superb ball across the six-yard box.
Wilkin’s men were looking good, with new man Ammar Dyer once again impressing down the right. But the Bucks couldn’t quite get things right in the final third. That was until the 10th minute of stoppage time, when Jordan Cranston found Remi Walker on the edge of the box, and Walker took a couple of touches before firing past Peter Crook in the Peterborough goal. It was the least that the Bucks deserved, as the sides went in level at 1-1.
The Bucks began the second half in the same way that they had ended the first, harrying the visitors high up the pitch to keep the ball as far away from Armson’s goal as possible. And on 52 minutes the Bucks got the reward for their hard work. Fletcher found Walker in space, and the Telford midfielder advanced to the edge of the box before hitting a shot that skidded across the surface and in off the post.
Sports very nearly had an equaliser 10 minutes later. A mix up in the Bucks’ defence saw the Turbine round Armson, but Cranston was round on the cover to pick the ball up on the line before dribbling away to safety.
Fletcher did well to win the ball back before spraying it out to Dylan Allen-Hadley on the left, who suddenly had a two-on-one with George available in the middle. Allen-Hadley slipped in George, who nearly stumbled over the wet ball but just about managed to keep his feet and stab the ball underneath Crook to make it 3-1.
But with the Bucks in almost complete control, the game was turned on its head in the 80th minute. An seemingly innocuous ball forward saw Josiah Dyer swing a boot at the ball before ending up on the floor, but to the disbelief of most of the SEAH Stadium referee Ben Wyatt pointed to the spot. It seemed like a soft decision, and it saw Piggott pick up a second yellow card to leave the Bucks down to 10 men. Elliott Whitehouse stepped up for Sports and just about squeezed his penalty past Armson.
It was all hands to the pump now, as the Bucks looked to hang onto their narrow lead. There was a huge chance for the visitors in the 87th minute when a mix-up between Cawthorne and Armson left the goal gaping. But Sports couldn’t get a shot away, and Armson eventually collected.
Ricardo Dinanga nearly nicked a fourth goal for the Bucks on the break, only to be denied by a good save from Crook. Before a large altercation on the touchline ended up with Telford’s strength and conditioning coach, Rhys Morris, being shown red.
On the pitch, the Bucks saw out the final few minutes to record a thoroughly deserved 3-2 win. An unbelievable effort from the Bucks and the Telford faithful alike who more than played their part in a second win on the spin for Wilkin’s men. The three points sees the Bucks climb up to 12th in the table.
